Hurricane Sandy: Potential Super Storm to Hit East Coast

When you think of sandy, you might think of beaches. Unfortunately, life’s not a beach in Jamaica, Cuba, and the Bahamas this week, where Hurricane Sandy is bringing intense wind and rain as she steams north, towards the East Coast of the United States. On October 22nd, the eighteenth Atlantic depression of the year formed. By October 25th, Sandy was a Category 2 hurricane with winds near 105 mph. Sandy moved through Jamaica and Cuba, causing flooding, and is being blamed for 11 deaths in Cuba, where 3000 buildings were also damaged. The historic city of Santiago de Cuba suffered the worst damage from the storm. On Friday, Sandy reduced somewhat in strength to a Category 1 hurricane as it moved through the Bahamas.

Hurricane Warnings: Possible Super Storm For the East Coast

In Florida, hurricane warnings have been issued for Miami, Jacksonville, Melbourne and Key West. There is concern that Sandy could merge with other seasonal storms to create a much stronger storm that will pummel the US East Coast. This storm could bring heavy rain and snow and strong winds to the coast early next week.

Hot Towers: Why Are They Significant?

Hurricane Sandy contained hot towers when it was forming – what does that mean to meteorologists? A ‘Hot Tower’ is a high thundercloud that sends out a lot of heat. Hot tower rain clouds reach all the way up into the troposphere. Hot air rises, and in the case of a hot tower, hot air pushes way up into the atmosphere, up to nine miles into the air. Air cools when it rises, and coalesces into rain; the storm clouds emit this heat.

The presence of a hot tower generally means that a storm will intensify, so it’s one of the ways meteorologists predict whether a tropical depression will turn into a tropical storm or a hurricane. Not all tropical depressions turn into something interesting – some of them disintegrate before they can turn into a tropical storm. Depressions that contain hot towers, such as now-Hurricane Sandy, however, are twice as likely to intensify, rather than fading away.

Sandy May Bring A Halloween Blast To the East Coast

It remains to be seen whether Sandy will wreak havoc in areas pummeled by Hurricane Irene last year. If this hurricane does merge with a polar air mass in the Atlantic, the storm will likely bring coastal flooding, high winds and rain, and power outages to areas up and down the US East Coast, including New York City, Boston, and the Carolinas up to Maine, so preparation is key for residents of those areas.

the way i see it. if it comes inland we are in for a real mess. but if it goes out to sea it wont be so bad. except i would not want to be on a ship out there in the first place.

  • zmanbeachcomber

well we shall see which way it tends to go. inland or out to sea.

  • Alexandra Mensing

We’re ready. Two generators filled and tested; extra branches trimmed back; food for us and the pets secure, and drinking water; Pet reservoirs full. Both cars are tanked up. I have a stash of yarn ready! What worries me is not the intensity, but the huge area of the most populous region of the US is going to be affected. I think this is a bona fide history making storm.

What is meant by ‘Hot Towers’. The definition I get from ‘Google’ is : “Hot Tower” is a tropical cumulonimbus cloud that penetrates the tropopause, i.e. it reaches out of the lowest layer of the atmosphere, the troposphere, into the stratosphere. In the tropics, the tropopause typically lies at least 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) above sea level. These towers are called “hot” because they rise high due to the large amount of latent heat released as water vapor condenses into liquid and freezes into ice. The presence of hot towers with a tropical cyclone’s eye all can indicate strengthening is more likely during the following six hours.
Let us fondly hope & pray the Lord that N.C. or, for that matter, the whole of the Eastern part of USA is spared by the ‘Hot Tower’ and “Hurricane Sandy”.

I GOT THREE CASES OF DEPENDS IN CASE IT GETS BAD ENOUGH TO CAUSE FLOODING

@Bobby Burkey, the way you worded your comment was as if you are a none beleaver as well as the others you were speaking of, yet you know to call on the Lord…You can be saved from hell you know, its not to late, if you just truely believe in your heart and confess to Jesus you are a sinner an confess him for who Jesus is an that he came an died for our sins an rose again in 3days an ask him into ur heart, you are saved, an you then dont have to worry about any of this storm stuff or anything else for that matter, bc the Lord will be with you always and instead of dying a none believer an going to hell, you can then rest in knowing you will die a born again christian in the Lord who will walk with the Lord in white in the Kingdom of Heaven……….
Also as for the storm an what I come here to say to start with is: no matter how bad this storm gets or not, the Lord is showing his rath among the ppl. My God is an awsome God and I can see the time for the Lords return is near and Lord Jesus I am ready, weather you are coming 2mrrw, next week or in a year, I am ready to come home to you an get out of this sinful world…How much more does God need to show his rath b4 ppl will open their eyes

  • dems

They should rename it hurricane Candy Crowley

  • Gord Baker

Since they rarely get the weather correct for 3 days in a row, I am not too worried.
It is different in someways with a hurricaine since they can be tracked . No one knows if it will turn East or West or when. Calm down and stay prepared all year.

  • Dave Thomas

    Isn’t Sandy a category 1, barely a hurricane?

  • Bart

    What ….no internet…omg!

  • lazywolf

This is going to be a terrible event, and I pray for all of those in harm’s way. Having said that, I’m sure that Obama will blame the storm for his landslide loss. If the mass transit systems fail that will cost him thirty million democratic votes. Everyone knows that, when the weather is bad, Republican turnout is better than dems. Must be because we’re all racists that keep jobs and personal transportation. Will he let it be the act of God that it surely is, or will he call a national state of emergency and nulify the election results?

  • buster lhoad

For all of you who go out and buy a generator, remember this. If this storm last several days and things become desperate, you are a sitting duck. People who are cold and hungry and see you have lights and warmth are gonna be pizzed off. If you have the money for a generator, you better back it up with a Mossburg or Beretta shotgun. Think New Orleans folks. Good luck. Been there, done that 5 times on the Gulf Coast.

  • nightsong

Keep your “cool” don’t panic and think smart through the difficulties that come, God bless each of you on the east coast. This storm may be just the beginning of more difficulties to come in the near future. We need to stay focused and take each event as it happens with God’s grace and guidance. Strength, clear mind, and Love in God, to you.
